When asked to write something about myself, I was stuck for words and didn't think the ‘change in me' was such a big deal. But now that I have started to put this on paper and looked at my old photos, I have noticed who I was back then and who I am now – and what a HUGE difference!
I was one of these people who didn't think I was that bad – maybe just a little chubby... Until one day I put my details into a calculator to find my BMI put me in the obese category and that I was disgustingly unhealthy. I was in shock and didn't like that label to be put on me. When I look back now, I was very unhappy physically and mentally.
I somehow found myself at the gym to do something about this. I went upstairs and started at 5 minutes on the cross trainer and Level 1, Speed 2. I was working out to my limit; I was buggered and 5 minutes was my work out done for the day. After a week or so I could do 10 minutes, now I can easily do Level 4 at a speed of 8-9 for 20 minutes – as a warm up! Being persistent, my fitness has increased and with this the weight came off.
I train most days and twice a week with a personal trainer. I love it now – nothing feels better than a great work out and how it gives you life and energy. Learning new techniques and challenges to become stronger and fitter is very rewarding emotionally.
Before when people told me it (fitness) is a lifestyle change, I thought ‘blah blah blah whatever'. But as I started to feel the difference in my body and health I didn't want to abuse it any more. (Except for the occasional chocolate – sorry Jo! J )
I am now very proud of how much I have achieved and who I have become. | |

I have gone from a size 18 to a 14/16. I came second in the 8 Week Challenge (only just missing out to Darryn) and lost 6.30% of fat.
I have always has a weight problem with not being very active because of medical issues, but I got to the point where I had to make some changes or continue to face being sick every winter. I decided it was time to get myself fit – I had a goal to lose 20kgs by this winter.
I joined the gym late October 2009 and started going to water aerobics 3 times a week. I found great support from staff and other ladies and men at the water aerobics. When I first started I couldn't get through even 15 minutes of water aerobics without needing to stop, but after a month or so I was doing the whole 45 minute session without needing to stop – and still with energy to do more afterwards. With the support and words of encouragement from Jo and Narelle and many others at the gym this inspired me I decided to join the 8 Week Challenge. I then started working out on the bike and treadmill and coming to the gym 5 times a week sometimes.
I have had my blood pressure medication halved. I would normally have to see my lung specialist every 3 months, but I was told in February that I didn't have to go back for 12 months. The specialist was so surprised to see the great improvement in my lungs.
I enjoy being on Lite and Easy food plan and not having to worry about preparing food – this has also helped with my weight loss.
I now go to the gym 3 to 5 days a week for ½ and hour to an hour. I have this great new love for exercise and I enjoy feeling so good. I love the new me and would never want to go back to the way I was. If I can do, it anyone can.
